BASKET OF FLOWERS

A charming work, this oil on canvas features a set of flowers composed in a wicker basket on a stone entablature. The work is monogrammed V.C. and dated 1862. It recalls certain treatments of flower painters who evolved in Mulhouse in the 19th century, a city which through its specialty, textiles, initiated through its drawing workshops of many artists.
