Alsatian Folk art - Calendar frame dated 1818

This calendar frame is a fine example of folk art, made of fruitwood with inlays of inlaid geometric frieze patterns, it bears the date 1818. Its pediment is in a gendarme's hat, it is topped with three fruitwood bobèches and has center a coat of arms.
In past centuries, calendars and almanacs were bound and had many pages and headings. The wooden calendar frames were intended to protect this precious document, you could slide and remove the almanac through a side slot and thus consult its headings. Our piece is presented here with an old German missing calendar which was the one commonly spoken in Alsace in the 18th and 19th century. South of Alsace. XIXth century.
